RE: Careful of Oil Change Shops....

Come on now, how much training do you need to change the oil? We always hear these horror stories about quick lube places, but think about the volume. How many oil changes are done by theses places and how many are done incorrectly? I would bet the number is less then one percent. How many genuis shade tree dudes that change their own oil properly dispose of the used oil and filter? Give these guys a break. Bad oil changes at quick lube joints is like the Wal Mart camper guy with chairs set out and grill going. It almost does not exist.

RE: Wichita Falls, Tx.

Right in the middle of Wichita Falls is a very nice looking campground. We haven't stayed there but have seen it from the road. It is right on 287. Look for the exit signs, it's marked clearly. I believe it is exit 1 or 2 depending on the direction you are traveling.
This is a great overnight park. Water and Elect available w/ a dump station(it takes a little jiggling to get large rigs close). We also got wifi from the hotel down the road. Cost (if I remember right) was about $10.00
We stay here every time we go through Wichita Falls. Great place, conveinent and run by the city.

RE: Dog Breed good for Family & Camping?

One more opinion.
Get a *real* dog. Not some ankle biting, fuzz ball, yapper.
:B
Pit Bulls are not American Staffordshire Terriers. They are two seperate distinct breeds.
You may be thinking of Staffordshire Bull Terriers, which are much smaller, narrower head, and very friendly little guys. Sadly, they generally get the same treatment by insurance companies as their larger cousins, because of the breed has the word "bull" in it.
In every other part of the world, Pit Bull and AmStaff are registered as one breed. In the US, the United Kennel Club calls the breed an American Pit Bull Terrier. The American Kennel Club calls the breed the American Staffordshire Terrier. You can take your AKC registered AmStaff and get full UKC registration on it as an American Pit Bull Terrier.
No, that is not what I am thinking. These are two distinctive breeds. After dog fighting was banned in the United States in 1900, two strains of these dogs were developed, a show strain and a fighting dog strain. The show strain was labeled the American Staffordshire, while the fighting dog strain was labeled the American Pit Bull Terrier. The two are now being recognized as separate breeds. While the UKC may recogonize an AmStaff as a pit bull the AKC will not recognize a pit bull as an AmStaff. Both are good breeds, but they are not the same.

I could not agree more. Your first instinct to get a pound dog is still your best bet. Whatever dog you get will take on the personality of you and your family. We travel with a big mutt, around 85 pounds and a Papillion, around 4 pounds. They are best buddies, and travel well. Pit Bulls are not American Staffordshire Terriers. They are two seperate distinct breeds.

RE: Texas hill country campgrounds

The Hill Country is what they call the Edwards Plateau west of Austin, Texas. It is a region of rocky ground unsuitable for farming, almost a desert. It has ravines cut into the limestone that some people call hills. For vegetation it is covered with thorny mesquite trees, juniper bushes that cause 'cedar fever' and weeds that people think are flowers. Lady Bird was the wife of President Johnson.

RE: Help Us to Understand

It has been my experience that cost has nothing to do with staying at Flying J or Wal Mart. It is all about convenience and being courteous to others. The businesses that allow Rv’ers to spend the night are located on major roads and offer easy access to a generally broad expanse of fairly level parking surface. When traveling to distant locations, these places are ideal for rest stops. These rest stops may be during the day or during the night and are beneficial to the business as well as the traveler. They are also of no concern to anyone not directly involved in that transaction. Many people do not understand the transaction and it is my opinion you either get it or you don’t. I have never seen the mythical Cousin Eddie firing up the grill and emptying his holding tanks in the storm drain and probably never will. I use free parking locations when traveling to distant destinations, but under normal circumstances I will always stay in organized campgrounds upon reaching my destination.

RE: What are the "must see" places on the way to Grand Canyon?

Palo Duro Canyon State Park, just outside of Amarillo, hosts the official play of the State of Texas every night in the Pioneer Amphitheater. The play is about the folks that settled the area. It is pretty cool.

I don't travel to many freeways so I buy most of my fuel at 'gas stations' versus 'truck stops'.

You won't like IH 35. The traffic from Georgetown down to San Antonio is horrendous as Austin drivers are about the worst in the country.

RE: Does this make sense? Reality check please

According to the one article, the demise of GM may cause a $150 billion dollar decline in tax revenue. And if my aunt had balls she'd be my uncle! We are already giving them a $25 billion dollar loan to build electric cars that can travel 40 miles. Now they want another $50 billion! They have already caused a $75 billion decline in tax revenue by taking that money. To top it off, the UAW is already spouting off that they will not concede anything to ensure the auto industry remains viable. I say let them rot in hell. We can buy our cars and trucks from whatever company comes out the other side. I personnaly don't care if that company is owned by the Japanese or the Germans, just as long as it is not owned by the US Government. It would end up as efficient as the post office or AMTRAC.

RE: Tow Notices

Or, you could look into making the motorhome your residence and find a place to park it and not deal with the whole apartment mess. Then you've solved parking it, storing it, and apartment rent.
This sounds like the correct answer to me! Haven't you ever heard you can't beat city hall or the high school dropouts they hire to enforce the law.

RE: Trailer burned to ground

I had the same thing happen to my house. The neighbor’s house burnt to the ground and did about $6,500 damage to my house. I claimed it through my company, paid the deductible. My company then subrogated the claim against the neighbor’s insurance company and was fully reimbursed. My company then refunded my deductible to me. It took about 6 - 8 months.
Let the experts handle it. For your information I am in the insurance business so I knew the drill. I could have pursued it myself but why?
This is the correct way to handle this situation.

RE: OK cold weather campers....how to keep her warm?????

We camp like that here in Texas all winter long. Lows in the 20s or 30s at night and highs in the 50s or 60s during the day. We usually leave the city water disconnected and run a small electric space heater to save on propane. The only problem we have had is with condensation, but we leave an overhead vent open and that helps.

Why do you even have insurance? If you are not going to file a claim when you have an incident it seems like a waste of money to carry protection.

RE: Closing truck plant

I still say 50 bucks an hour to build a car is union robbery. How much of that hourly wage went into some union hucksters pocket? It is assembly line work, no brains required. If you can pay a Mexican 2 dollars an hour to build the same car it should not be to anyones suprise that the jobs will all end up in Mexico. If you folks are looking to Obama to save the day, well, good luck!

RE: Another Newmar nightmare !!!!!!

Caveat Emptor! So many people are buying used to avoid the hit on depreciation or high cost or taxes or for whatever reason. These same people that are not helping the RV industry by buying used are also complaining that the RV industry is not helping them out! We either buy new and have factory support or we buy used and go it on our own. We can’t have it both ways.

RE: 1st time long trip, NH to NM

Crossing the Panhandle of Texas makes it easy to stop at Palo Dura Canyon SP, which is just south of Amarillo. You might want to check out the Wichita Mountains National Wildlife Refuge in southwestern Oklahoma. Central State Park in Edmond, Oklahoma is real nice and appears to be on your way. Maybe Branson, Missouri or the Football Hall of Fame in Canton, OH. How about the National Museum of the USAF in Dayton, OH.
